South African Bobotie
Traditional South African Dish
Everyone has their own recipe
This is just one version - Try your own variation
Serve with savoury rice and Vegetables
Serves 2
Preparation Time 20 minutes
Cooking time in the oven 40 Minutes
Ingredients
• 300gr beef mince
• 1 small Onion
• 2 cloves Garlic
• Butter to fry
• 1 slice of bread
• 2 dessert spoons mango chutney
• 2 dessert spoons madras curry paste
• 3 tablespoons Sultanas
• 1 teaspoon mixed herbs
• 1 teaspoon ground ginger
• 1 teaspoon ground allspice
• 1 teapoon ground corriander

• 200 ml Milk
• 2 eggs
• 1 teaspoon Tumeric
• 1 large or 2 small bananas
• 4 bay leaves
• Salt and Pepper
Method

Finely chop the onion and fry in the butter until soft
Add the beef mince and crushed Garlic. Fry until browned
Crumb the bread in a grinder and mix into the meat mixture
Traditionally the bread is soaked in water and squeezed to a pulp before adding
Add the herbs, spices, salt & pepper, mix well and cook for a further 5 minutes
Transfer to a oven dish and press down to firm
Top with a layer of thinly sliced bananas
Whisk together the milk, eggs and Tumeric and pour over the bananas
Top with the Bay leaves
Bake in a pre heated oven 200C for 35-40 minutes until golden brown
